The overnight rain that fell in Sussex played to the strengths of Ice Max who was delivered with perfect timing by Clifford Lee to land the G2 Celebration Mile in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum.
Trainer Karl Burke, who was completing a double on the Goodwood card following the earlier victory of Serving With Style, made no secret of his delight when the ground eased at the Sussex venue.
That faith in his soft-ground loving son of Dark Angel proved to be well founded as Lee and his willing accomplice picked off the fancied Poker Face late on to score by a length.
“The more rain that fell, the more confident we were,” said Burke.
“He is a progressive, talented horse and when he learns to settle better will stay further. We are delighted with his performance.”
